MACULAR DISEASE
The macula is a
small area at the back of the eye that allows you to see fine
details such as print on a page. Macular disease can cause
serious vision loss. Advanced macular damage
causes blurring of your central vision. Most blindness is preventable
if diagnosed and treated early. Regular examinations by an
ophthalmologist (Eye MD) are
important.

Age
Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) - In its most severe, or
"wet" form, the retinal blood vessels leak and break leading to
uncontrolled scarring and rapid loss of
vision.
Early treatment can prevent this permanent
blindness.
§
ARMD
is the major cause of blindness among Americans over age
50. The cause is
unknown.
§
Macular Drusen - These are retinal deposits
and can be an early sign of ARMD. Protection from
ultraviolet light and the use of antioxidant vitamins
and lutein may prevent progression.
§
Other macular conditions such as "Pucker" or
"Gliosis," a wrinkling of the retina, can disturb central
vision. They can
be detected early and treated by an
ophthalmologist.
§
Central Serous Retinopathy – Fluid builds up
under the macula causing distortion of vision. It often
resolves without treatment.
